Cemeteries in SF Peninsula and South Bay
Anne Averill, former Executive Director of the non-profit Cypress Lawn
Heritage Association Colma's Cypress Lawn Cemetery, tells about this statue, located at
Colma's Cypress Lawn Cemetery. It is a a replica of W. W. Story's "Angel of
Grief," the original of which is located in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome. The
original was formed as a memorial to Evelyn Story; the one here memorializes Ann R.
Pool. There is another replica on the Stanford University campus near the Stanford
family mausoleum, commissioned by Jane Stanford from sculptor Antonio Bernieri as a
tribute to her brother in 1901 and again in 1908 after the first one was destroyed in
the 1906 earthquake. Two other copies of the "Angel of Grief" statues are
known to exist, one in Hengham, MA, Cemetery and the other at Metairie Cemetery, New
Orleans, LA. William Wetmore Story (1819-1895) was an American, son of a Justice of the
U.S. Supreme Court, who decided to become a sculptor after graduating from Harvard Law
School, settling among an American colony of artists in Italy. His sons also became
artists: Julian, a painter, and Waldo, a sculptor.
